Full disclosure

Every time I hear a good mix, I always wonder 'is that just the song or is the DJ really doing something?' I'm all mixed-out for a while, but I'll put up here a screenshot of my recent web mix so you can know how much of each track you're hearing (gets bigger if you click on it):

I'm cooking up something interesting in Reaktor - it's taking a lot of thinking because I'm not a programmer. Right now it's cumbersome and takes a lot of processor power (and it doesn't work), but soon! Hope to be done next week and I will post it here. Oh yeah, I can't tell you what it is. It should be useful for laptop DJs, however.

If you're after mixes, Hockey just dropped a sick one so "kop dat shit". Also TAPE has the Richard Carnage mix and the new Nightmoves mix. I'm too scared to check Skulljuice.

Here is an actual unmixed mp3 that you can play with:

So my girlfriend had a little cough...

Times like that you have to ask yourself WWT6D? (what would Three-6 do?)

Step 1: Go up to random person in cafe "Hi, are you busy? No? Can I use your laptop for a second?"
Step 2: Googling "sizzurp ingredients" gives you 1100 hits. Not bad. The true recipe (serves two):
  • Two adult doses of cough syrup w/promethazine
  • Two jolly ranchers (dissolved)
  • Some codeine (the internet is vague on exact dosage, so don't be a hero, keep it to like one pill of whatever you have)
  • Milk of magnesia
  • Obviously a joint packed with some Bin Laden or a similar weed blend (keep this separate from the sizzurp)
  • 12 oz Sprite (here I would substitute with Red Bull to counter the drowsiness effects of the rest of the shit)

Step 3: go to 24hr drug store and read label after cough syrup label saying loudly "NO PROMETHAZINE IN THIS ONE EITHERRR. WE'RE NEVER GONNA GET CRUNK!" Promethazine is prescription-only, so we settled on the dirtiest store brand nighttime stuff.

Step 4: Roll a joint. Having never tried sizzurp - I've had a nice life until now - I thought it better to pre-roll than to have to roll under the influence.

Step 5: Pour vodka into plastic cup (too classy for styrofoam, unfortch) and kind of stare at it for a while and think about how much you fucking hate your body.

Step 6: In a mortar (glass bowl) crush up pills with a pestle (chopstick). We made the following substitutions: Tylenol 3 for Codeine (as T3 is acetaminophen + codeine) and Tums for Milk of Magnesia (Ca2+ ion in tums is pretty much the same shit as Mg2+ ion in milk of magnesia and tums is way cheap)

Step 7: Vodka is a pretty good solvent as it contains both polar and non-polar components in a pretty even ratio. Dump the crushed pills and tums into the vodka and see what happens.

Step 8: Add 60 mL syrup and top up with Sprite - boy, the fucker bubbles (sugars from the jolly ranchers and tums alter the vapour pressure of the sprite, thus CO2 bubbles come out). Sadly our store-brand sizzurp isn't purple.

Step 9: Make sure you've queued up Sippin On Some Syrup before you take your first sip. Probably get someone else to try it first to make sure it's not lethal. Light the joint meanwhile.

Step 10: Tastes pretty lethal, but you have to get rid of that cough somehow.

Observations: sizzurp is full of the type of shit you should never ingest. That much acetaminophen fucks your kidneys pretty hard and codeine+alcohol is like self-destruction in a cup. However, you get quite a buzz.

Conclusions: last time I ever do stupid shit

Alright, I love IDM

Sometimes it's good to listen to something other than Bin Laden whilst getting crunk. The other day I had a nice sesh in the park to Arovane & Phonem's collabo album, Aer [valid]. Such dazzling work on the part of both. In addition the collabo tracks, there are some strictly Arovane and strictly Phonem pieces that each fit the soundscape very well.

Arovane - (Fard) Ent:r

This features beautiful, mechanical-sounding percussion, with a really subtle staticky noise that's either a reverse hit or something with really sharp decay/release. It sounds like a printer or copier advancing paper, like a spindle making exactly a quarter turn... ha, I'm reading my notes from when I was listening to it blunted. Anyway, that noise alone does it for me, but there's also the high melody near the middle - so intricate and multi-layered - killer!

Here is a grainy-ass flikr photo of Arovane in Portland:

IDM shows - stark decor and not a lot of people, though I bet it sounded lovely.

Oh, almost forgot, big tings are gwanning on the ridetothis harddrive, so watch out.

Mylo live

These equations look pretty fucking stupid. Safe to say the pressure got dropped.

Actually it was a perfect night on all possible fronts. I didn't even notice who was DJ ing cause I was efffffed, but it all sounded really good, including MSTRKRFT, whom I am not normally fond of. The system at Sonic really came through.

The high point was when someone (maybe Mylo or The Juan MacLean) played the M.A.N.D.Y. vs. Missy Elliot song I'd posted just before the show. I was so psyched to hear it... but there was no Missy vocal, wtf? Meanwhile my girlfriend is like "Cooool, Booka Shade". So the rest of the night we pretty much broke up over who the song was actually by. Some points we agreed on:

A. The instrumental of the M.A.N.D.Y vs. Missy song was definitely what was playing
B. It did not sound unlike Booka Shade
C. M.A.N.D.Y and Booka Shade are on the same label and hang out and such

But would M.A.N.D.Y. release a mash-up of Booka Shade and Missy under their name?
Kind of. It's an unofficial release, so anything is possible.

Apparently M.A.N.D.Y. do a remix of Lindstrom's I Feel Space, which I have to get. Apologies for not posting the Freeform Reform mix, my mp3 is corrupt. If I get around to ripping the record, it will get up for sure. Here's a song to tide you over in the meantime:

Nick Chacona - Meso Loco (Putsch 79 mix)

Putsch 79 is Bangkok Impact and someone else. This is some really crisp italo disco. I love how they work the synths - fine stuff.

Lose Body Control

I am in a fucking great mood because of this:

...and this:
so I'm posting a bunch of songs:

Missy Elliot and M.A.N.D.Y. - Lose Body Control (In Tha Club)

Mylo - Guilty of Love

The first so should've made Blogarhythm. Around a minute something a really perfect synth comes in that just slays me. You know that shit would rage if you turned up the filter freq a bit. So nice.

The second because of Mylo tonight - holla yes.

Last night I put on the Prima Norsk 3 space disco comp and it turned out to be pretty exceptional. I expect to listen to this as much as I have been to Alexander Robotnik's discotech compilation (i.e. a lot). Not everything on this sounded like Lindstrom & Prins Thomas or Todd Terje. Some stuff was admittedly quirky, but crazy interesting. For example this song:

Olav Brekke & Sideshow Jogge - Gul Boss

It's like nordic, but has little italo bits, as well as a very Thriller-sounding bassline. Sick!

Dirty North

Some shit that didn't make Blogarhythm (how is that really spelled? A part of me doesn't want to include the first h): Bangkok Impact - Accokeek

The hi-hats in this make me think about fucking scandinavians. It's so nordic and so crazy. Like pound back a dozen Heinekens (they probably drink Heinekens like the rest of the world) and roll up to the club in Helsinki and get this beat on and tear it up.

Speaking of tearing it up: Mylo & The Juan MacLean DJ at Sonic tomorrow - that deserves a hell yeah.

Speaking of nordic, last post I mentioned Lindstrom - I feel Space (Freeform Reform mix). At last I got around to listening to more than the first minute (didn't start out too promising), but it gets really good near the middle. It starts to sound oddly like LCD Soundsystem - Tribulations but with like a Rachel Goswell-esque vocal. I don't have it on mp3 yet/hate ripping records, but I will post it here as soon as it downloads.

This week I'll get around to posting some mixes I made for my girlfriend months ago - finally.

Re: Diplo
It was pretty slammin', but Bone Crusher - Never Scared did not get played this time/I was upset. At 4pm that day my friend popped in his fronts and with his golden grin exclaimed: "Well, time to get krunked", thus I was regally krunked by the time Diplo came on/don't remember much of what was played. It was good, though.

I would like to give shouts to Vanessa & Elise for their inaugural DJ set - I was there, in 2006, Avery's backyard.

Finally, I'm going to start looking for a job, as it's that time of the life. If anyone needs a "renewable energy technology expert", please holler. The blog will, of course, remain. Watch for cameos/collabos.

Diplo in Toronto on Friday

Finally I am near the laptop/crates again, thus cooking up a new mix (holy, it has been a while).

Before I drop it, though, can someone tell me what song comes in around 2:30 in this Hollertronix mix? Hard to find track listing for this. It's track 2 of something with 11 tracks.

I won't use it in the mix, just curious. Reminds me of Tomas Andersson - Happy Happy, but it's clearly something else. The album that this comes from, whatever it is, is the fucking sickest Hollertronix comp of all of them. Like multiple Three-6 tracks AND Bone Crusher in the same comp, god bless them! Judging by Diplo's set at Sonar, Friday will be A+++++
